- This is not to defend anyone against your criticism but, I'd put it that way:
-
- To hardware design there is more than "just the chips", it's the archictecture
- as a whole and the concept behind it. "Amigaish hardware" for me has never
- been 'cool custom chips' in the first place. (I am neither hardware-hacker nor
- coder and would not understand so much, anyways ;) But it is the efficient
- integration of functions needed for the OS within the hardware AND tightly
- related low-level software controlling it.
-
- Thus the Amiga became a computer where ten years back in time the terms
- 'plug'n play' and 'easy-computing' had their justification.
-
- Amiga's custom chipsets have been OK for their time - there were no other
- sophisticated AND achieveable solutions. Nowadays there is a whole new world
- of special solutions to special problems at far more accessible prices.
-
- It will not be easy, but viable, to find even more abstract ways to "speak to
- the hardware" through low-level entities of any future AmigaOS, consequently
- delivering interfaces to virtually all the ever-renewing and -improving
- off-the-shelf components from third parties.
-
- Hence, the "Amigaish hardware" you mentioned would rather be an 'amigaish way
- of using any suitable hardware'.
-
- I think it is this one should keep in mind as the true advantage Amiga, through
- its hard- and software conception, still has before the Clones.
-

-
- Though ESC*M's hassles are true, this conclusion is mere propaganda...

-
- well, I am not an American, so I believe you would have to sort this out to
- me a bit ;)
